Gledhill Torrent and Boilermate hot water cylinders

Gledhill are a major producer of hot water tanks and cylinders such as the Torrent and the Boilermate to name a few. Although Gledhill make a wide range of standard hot water cylinders and now are gaining a reputation for producing stainless steel unvented cylinders there are a great deal of Thermal Store Units produced by the Gledhill company. A Thermal Store type cylinder works in reverse to the standard cylinders. The cylinders which come in a variety of sizes hold a full volume of hot water. As this water is stored only and not consumed directly is held at a much higher temperature hence the need for specialised immersion heaters. These have to work harder and longer at higher temperatures than standard copper immersions. The cold water mains will pass through a coil and in the case of newer thermal store cylinder the mains water will pass through a plate to plate heat exchanger. The mains will rapidly collect heat from the thermal store and deliver mains pressure hot water at the taps. In essence the storage cylinder is low pressure with a header or feed tank for expansion and only the water running through the coil or plate to plate heat exchanger is mains ( high ) pressure. Why did Gledhill produce these units when it could be simpler just to install mains fed unvented hot water cylinder? When unvented cylinders were first being introduced there was much speculation about the dangers of high pressure cylinders containing hot expanding water relying on safety valves. There was talk about complicated licensing for engineers and registration etc. Although engineers now require doing a training course on unvented cylinders the original fears have been unfounded. Gledhill Thermal Store units were brought in to cater for the earlier market as they gave high pressure hot water from a low pressure tank. We have found a current demand for Thermal Store in recent times due to the fact that they may be installed without a safety discharge. This permits these high pressure hot water systems to be located in the middle of a property where there is no means of running a safety valve discharge pipe which is an essential feature of an unvented unit.
