WHICH TYPE OF PLUMBING SYSTEM DO I HAVE?

Before deciding on the purchase of your new shower it's important to ensure that they are compatable with the type of plumbing system you have.

With many of todays modern ranges of showers requiring a minimum amount of pressure to operate we have put together a simple guide to help you make the right choice.

HOW WILL I KNOW WHAT TYPE OF PLUMBING STYSTEM I HAVE?

UNVENTED INSTANTANEOUS ELECTRIC OR GAS/OIL FIRED COMBINATION BOILERS

Combination boilers are nearly always wall-mounted ( there are some which are floor mounted ) which will fire up when the hot water tap is opened.

They supply an unlimited amount of hot water under mains pressure.

No hot water cylinder.

No cold water storage tank. ( Please note there are exceptions. There are some instances when combination boilers were installed but the cold water storage tank was still used to supply cold water.

LOW PRESSURE GRAVITY FED SYSTEM FEATURES.

A cold water stotage tank which is usually found in the loft space.

A hot water cylinder which is usually found in an airing cupboard.

Heated from either a gas fired boiler or immersion heater.

A gas fired boiler central heating boiler.

HIGH PRESSURE MAINS UNVENTED SYSTEM

Gas fired boiler.

Heated from either a gas fired boiler or immersion heaters.

No cold water stotage tank.

Hot water system supplied from the cold water mains supply.

A seperate expansion vessel next to the cylinder.

A internal expansion vessel built into the cylinder ( Megaflow ).

HIGH PRESSURE GRAVITY FED SYSTEM FEATURES

A cold water stotage tank which is usually found in the loft space.

A hot water cylinder which is usually found in an airing cupboard.

A pump which increases the pressure of the hot and cold supplies.

A gas fired boiler central heating boiler.

All showers have a technical section where you will find information on minimum operating pressures and dimensions.

HIGH PRESSURE COMBINATION BOILER

HIGH PRESSURE COMBINATION BOILER

A combination boiler is so called because it combines both a central heating boiler and a water heater into one compact, self-contained unit (no hot or cold water tanks).

Unlike a conventional heating and hot water system, a combi does not store hot water. Instead it heats water directly from the cold mains.
HIGH PRESSURE UNVENTED MAINS CYLINDER

HIGH PRESSURE UNVENTED MAINS CYLINDER

Hot water is stored in a pressurised tank which can be located any where in the house. With this system there is no need for a header tank although a small expansion tank can sometimes be seen immediately above the stored hot water cylinder. Cold is supplied under mains pressure.
HIGH PRESSURE PUMPED SYSTEM

HIGH PRESSURE PUMPED SYSTEM

Cold water tank is normally located in the loft feeding a hot water cylinder usually in an airing cupboard. Both supplies are then pumped to provide a higher volume of water.

With the cold water storage tank normally located in the loft cold water supplies the hot water cylinder usually found in the airing cupboard. Both the hot and cold water supplies are pumped giving higher pressure.

LOW PRESSURE GRAVITY FED SYSTEM

LOW PRESSURE GRAVITY FED SYSTEM

With the cold water storage tank usually located in the loft the cold water feeds the hot water cylinder by gravity.
