CLICK ON SHOWERS GLOSSARY Below you will find a glossary of words which you may come across and require further information as to their meaning. |
BALANCED WATER SUPPLY Balanced water supply is the hot and cold water supplies being supplied under the same equal pressure.
BARA unit of measurement for water pressure.
0.1 bar is equal to a 1 metre head of water. In plumbing terms this means, for a gravity fed system, if the height of your cold water storage tank is 1 metre above the shower outlet, then you will have 0.1 bar of water pressure at the tap.
CONCEALED VALVE A shower valve which has its body mounted inside the wall. Most concealed valves will have a an adjustable depth.
CHECK VALVES / NON RETURN VALVES A plumbing fitting designed to allow water flow in one direction only.
COLD WATER STORAGE TANK/CISTERNFixed container for holding water at atmospheric pressure usually used for providing a feed to a vented domestic hot water cylinder. Normally located in the loft space and in some smaller dwellings located above the hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard. |
DIVERTERA valve allowing the water to be diverted to more than one different outlet. Either mounted as an individual control or as part of a thermostatic shower valve.
EXPOSED VALVE A shower valve which has it's body mounted onto the wall.
FIXED SHOWER HEADA fixed shower head mounted on the wall or from the ceiling. |
HIGH PRESSURE Water pressure 1bar and over.
INBALANCED PRESSURE SUPPLIES.Where the hot and cold water supplies are of unequal pressure. |
LOW PRESSURE Water pressure between 0.2 - 1.0 bar. All low pressure products are suitable for high pressure systems.
MANUAL VALVE This type of shower valve will allow fluctuation in the water temperature if the water pressure fluctuates. For example if a toilet is flushed or a tap is opened which shares the same hot or cold supply the temperature will change. |
MINIMUM PRESSURE The minimum required pressure which the shower valve will work at. Your pressure will vary depending on the type of shower and plumbing system installed. The minimum operating pressure of each shower is shown within the technical section.
PRESSURE EQUALISNG VALVE.A solution to the problem of unbalanced water supplies, this valve is designed to supply both hot and cold water supplies at equal pressure, regardless of any pressure variations in the incoming supply. |
SHOWER WALL OUTLET ELBOWNormally mounted on the wall next to the shower valve this is wher one end of the shower hose from a rail kit attaches to for the supply of water.
THERMOSTATIC VALVE A thermostatic shower valve will keep the shower temperature constant even if a toilet is flushed or a tap is opened elsewhere which shares the same hot or cold supply. |
WATER BYLAWSWater regulations set by your Local Water Authority in which installations are required to comply with. |
WRAS ( WATER REGULATIONS ADVOSIORY SCHEME)The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme approves water fittings and materials that meet the minimum requirements of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 in England and Wales, The Water Byelaws 2000 in Scotland and the Water Regulations in Northern Ireland. The approvals are granted by a panel of experts from the Water Supply Industry who meet regularly to review the fittings and the reports on any tests that have been undertaken.
Non-Metallic Materials in contact with the water must comply with the British Standard 6920, whilst the water fittings themselves must currently conform to either:
